Are you really in ketosis?

With a ketogenic diet, regular measurement of blood sugar and ketone levels is beneficial. This is the only way to know exactly whether you are actually in ketosis.

How to measure properly

Unfortunately, the media contain a wide variety of values, statements, and methods for measuring blood ketone levels. From our experience, the measurement by blood sampling has proven itself, because it offers the highest accuracy. All you need is a measuring device plus test strips (Ketosticks) - and of course, a regular table showing whether you are in ketosis.


Tips for the right measurement

You should perform your first measurement on an empty stomach in the morning after getting up and again in the evening (before eating) as a countercheck. Do not be irritated that your morning values will usually be lower than your evening values - this is entirely normal, even if you are later in ketosis!

Further measurements are carried out after your initial analysis, but then only in the evening before the meal. However, it is best to arrange the intervals of your measurements with your doctor, dietician or alternative practitioner - especially if your blood sugar values deviate significantly, you should contact a doctor or alternative practitioner.

So what are the "good" and "bad" values?

In principle, the ketone level is measured in mmol/l and can be categorized as follows::

  • Less than 0.5 mmol/l
    Insufficient amount of ketones for ketogenic metabolism

  • 0.5 to 1.5 mmol/l
    Medium ketosis
    This state is quite well attainable by pure conversion to ketogene nutrition with food proteins!

  • 1.5 to approx. 3-4 mmol/l
    Very ketogenic metabolic state
    This condition is well achievable through ketogenic nutrition + a lot of physical activity and MyAMINO®.
